David Satterfield, Donald Trump’s ambassador to Turkey — an individual who was instrumental in giving Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a U.S. greenlight to invade the Syrian Kurdish autonomous region within north and west Syria — is a longtime Israeli intelligence asset within the U.S. State Department.
In September 2017, Satterfield was pulled out of retirement to become the acting assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. On August 28 of this year, Satterfield took up his position in Ankara.
News reports that suggest Trump failed to inform the Israeli government of his plan to withdraw U.S. troops from a security buffer zone on the Syrian-Turkish border, thus giving Erdogan an unobstructed opportunity to begin ethnic cleansing of the Syrian Kurds to make way for Sunni Muslim Syrian refugees to re-settle in the region, are belied by the fact that Satterfield has maintained a direct intelligence pipeline to the Israelis for decades.
In 2005, the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors identified Satterfield as “USGO-2,” or “U.S. government official 2,” in the indictment of two American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) employees, Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman, for receiving highly classified code word intelligence documents from Defense Intelligence Agency official Larry Franklin. …
Most of Satterfield’s career within the State Department has been to serve as Mossad’s eyes and ears within the highest echelons of the U.S. diplomatic corps. The Franklin/AIPAC affair was not the only time Satterfield was linked to Israeli espionage operations.
Satterfield worked for Martin Indyk in the Clinton State Department and National Security Council. Satterfield also liaised during his stint at State with Bill Clinton’s Middle East envoy Dennis Ross who later headed the pro-Likud Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP). After Satterfield was identified in the indictment of Rosen, Weissman, and Franklin as USGO2, both Indyk and Ross came to Satterfield’s defense.
On September 21, 2000, Indyk, the then-US ambassador to Israel, had his security clearance suspended by the State Department. Indyk was investigated for violating State Department security regulations. At a September 25 State Department press conference, Richard Boucher, the department spokesman, said, “We have not suspended security clearances for an Ambassador previously, prior to this. This is the first time this has happened to an Ambassador.” Indyk was under investigation for passing sensitive classified intelligence to the Israelis. …
On August 4, 2005, WMR reported on the contents of the indictments of Franklin, Rosen, and Weissman: “In January 2002, Rosen met with another U.S. government official (USGO-2) [Satterfield] and received classified information that was sent to other AIPAC employees in a memo. During the next several months, Rosen continued to discuss classified information with USGO-2 [Satterfield] and an unnamed Pentagon official, the latter referring Rosen to Franklin. Rosen then established a liaison with Franklin. Rosen told Franklin at a meeting in February 2003 that he would try and secure a job at the National Security Council for Franklin so that he would be ‘by the elbow of the President.’ In March 2003, Rosen discussed a classified internal policy document concerning Iran with a ‘senior fellow of a Washington, DC think tank.’ Sources familiar with the investigation have reported the think tank is the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). In June 2003, Franklin told Weissman that he had a friend in the CIA from whom he could obtain a copy of the classified Iran policy document.”
Our August 4, 2005 report continued: “In July 2004, Franklin began cooperating with the FBI and passed classified CIA information to Weismann as part of the continuing FBI investigation. Some of the information concerned a ‘foreign government’s covert actions in Iraq.’ In August 2004, Rosen told Israeli agents that he and Weissman were under FBI investigation over the leaks from the Pentagon. It is important to note that the indictment states that the intelligence operation against the United States was a ‘conspiracy’ involving U.S. government officials, AIPAC officials, and foreign agents (Israelis) (there is also the possibility that Turkish agents were included in this category). The fact that Satterfield’s involvement in the Israeli espionage operation may have also involved Turkish intelligence agents makes his posting to Ankara as the U.S. ambassador all that more troubling].”The indictment also states that Iran’s nuclear program was a primary focus of the espionage conspiracy. …
