Quincy, M.E. – Science for Sale

From the IMBD synopsis: A sick woman with cancer leaves the hospital and dies. Those that have had physical contact with her die. Quincy soon discovers a new virus is the culprit of the deaths and hurries to find the cause.

As we shall examine, aspects of this potential epidemic, which Quincy helps to prevent, share characteristics of one then occurring (AIDS), and one that will come much later (Covid-19), particularly in its man-made origins.

Excerpts from the teleplay:

As Quincy examines the body of a vagrant… It’s as if the virus knocked out the body’s ability to mobilize its defense forces. I’ve never seen anything like that!

In one simple sentence, Quincy describes Autoimmune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is still a mystery disease at this time -the term AIDS is first used by the CDC on September 24 (HIV.gov timeline)- but it has not yet been connected to a virus. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) does not begin to be identified until May of the following year: Institut Pasteur.

Next case: examining the corpse, Sam describes… Grayish pink, granular, covered with small air filled blisters.

Quincy: That’s interstitial edema, and look at the inflammation of the bronchi, Where have we seen that before?

The vagrant. But we shall see symptoms of this type much, much later…

Health services has Quincy’s tissue samples analyzed: All we know is it’s a virus, but we can’t identify it… It resembles the SV-40 virus, immunologically it reacts the same way. Quincy: Yeah but it’s not SV-40. Health services guy: What I found is a completely different form of the virus, a mutant… this one went wild, several generations away from the original virus. A whole new sequence had been added to the viral DNA. I suspect it was done in a laboratory. Quincy: You mean it was genetically engineered?…

The virus might have resulted from a gain-of-function experiment. It is now widely believed that the Covid-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2, had originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as developed in gain-of-function research. Among the reasons for this strong suspicion are abrupt genetic discontinuities in sequences, unlikely to have resulted from natural selection. Oddly enough, HIV insertions were identified early on in the pandemic to be among the discontinuities…

…The evolution of 2019-nCoV remains elusive. We found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses. Importantly, amino acid residues in all the 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those in the HIV-1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag. Interestingly, despite the inserts being discontinuous on the primary amino acid sequence, 3D-modelling of the 2019-nCoV suggests that they converge to constitute the receptor binding site. The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have identity /similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature…

In the Quincy episode, SV-40 is being utilized by researcher Dr. Paul Flynn in an experimental gene therapy treatment for cancer patients. He had been initially conducting trials in a hospital with public funding, but public qualms about genetic research mean that his experiments are cancelled, upon which he is hired by, and given access to state-of-the-art equipment purchased by, the biotech company Bioneer Research, whose CEO Garfield Calhoun opines: You know, I love science. I appreciate scientists. Always have. You’re pioneers in a Brave New World… Calhoun however is a ruthless businessman who pushes Flynn for results in six months time. Flynn warns caution, but Calhoun shows his teeth. His greed could result in a pandemic, if not for Quincy and other responsible public health officials.

When Quincy makes the connection between Dr. Flynn’s research and the deceased bodies he has recently examined, he hurries to Flynn’s former boss, Chris Winston: SV-40! That’s the strain Paul Flynn was using! He had modified the DNA so it would attack cancer tumors. He tested and retested and it never attacked anything but cancer cells. Quincy: This is the first time it was tested on a human being where all cells effect each other. Now someone with a weakened immune system… Jack Klugman as Quincy somewhat flubs the lines here, and the logic escapes us – why wouldn’t “all cells effect each other” in animal models? – but we get the general idea.

What is most curious is the virus cited as Dr. Flynn’s experimental treatment for cancer, when SV-40 has something of a checkered history, of which Eric Collier -author of the teleplay, dated July 29, 1982- may have some familiarity. Sequencing of the plasmids from the Pfizer vials resulted in another ‘accidental’ discovery. Something was found that wasn’t in the sequence map disclosed by Pfizer to the EMA. This something is called a SV40 promoter. The SV40 promoter is a sequence that turns on gene expression, like a switch. It is also a potent nuclear localisation signal, meaning it makes a beeline for the nucleus. The entire SV40 genetic sequence came to infamous prominence in the 1960s having been found to have polluted the Salk polio vaccine, causing a subsequent surge in cancers...

McKernan states an obvious concern, “If (the SV40 promoter) becomes integrated into the genome it will turn on gene expression wherever it lands. If this happens to be an oncogene (a cancer-causing gene), you’ve got problems.”…

The scientific literature acknowledges the potential for foreign/synthetic DNA alone to be oncogenic (cancer-causing), infectious, and prothrombotic. In addition, genomic integration of a viral promoter like SV40 can contribute to cancer and is well known to cause leukemia in gene therapy trials.

Although mass vaccination programs have resulted in the eradication of a number of human infectious diseases, vaccine contamination has been a persistent concern. In particular, it is now known that the early polio vaccines were contaminated with at least one monkey virus, SV40. The transfer of monkey viruses to man via contaminated vaccines is particularly relevant to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), since the causative agent of AIDS, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), is thought to be derived from a simian precursor virus. Furthermore, human infection with this virus appears to be a relatively recent event. We hypothesize that the AIDS pandemic may have originated with a contaminated polio vaccine that was administered to inhabitants of Equatorial Africa from 1957 to 1959. The mechanism of evolution of HIV from this vaccine remains to be determined.

There is a distinct difference in the way that different theories about the origin of acquired immune deficiency syndrome have been treated, with the widely supported cut-hunter theory given relatively little scrutiny, while the oral polio vaccine theory has been subject to intense criticism. This difference in treatment cannot be explained as application of the scientific method. A better explanation is that the burden of proof is put on all contenders to the cut-hunter theory, giving it an unfair advantage, especially given that this assignment of the burden of proof appears to reflect non-scientific factors.

Regardless, the hypothesis would seem to have been put to rest…

Nature (Michael Worobey et al) – Origin of AIDS: contaminated polio vaccine theory refuted

Despite strong evidence to the contrary, speculation continues that the AIDS virus, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), may have crossed into humans as a result of contamination of the oral polio vaccine (OPV). This ‘OPV/AIDS theory’ claims that chimpanzees from the vicinity of Stanleyville–now Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo–were the source of a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVcpz) that was transmitted to humans when chimpanzee tissues were allegedly used in the preparation of OPV. Here we show that SIVcpz is indeed endemic in wild chimpanzees of this region but that the circulating virus is phylogenetically distinct from all strains of HIV-1, providing direct evidence that these chimpanzees were not the source of the human AIDS pandemic.

In any event, the presence of SV40 in HIV would be a moot point if the Duesberg hypothesis is correct…
